What happened: Rain delays pushed the Travelers Championship into a rare Monday finish. Both players sat at 21-under after 72 holes, forcing a sudden-death playoff on the par-4 18th. Hovland struck first a 7-foot birdie putt that just clipped the cup and dropped. Scheffler, with a putt from inside 3 feet to extend the playoff, missed it left. "I hit it on my line, I think it was just a little bit firm," Scheffler said immediately afterward. Game over. Hovland wins.
What else: Hovland's parents flew in from Norway and watched their son win on US soil for the first time. A crowd of Norwegian fans, fresh off attending their country's World Cup matches, sang and chanted him to victory. The Americans tried to drown them out with their own "Scot-tie Scheff-ler" chants. It didn't work. For Scheffler, this was his fourth runner-up finish of the season though his streak of 35 straight finishes inside the top 25 is the second-best run in the last 40 years, behind only Tiger Woods.

Even the best player alive misses putts. Scheffler is now winless since January despite four runner-ups, two of them in playoffs. The margins at the top of golf are razor thin and on Monday, those margins belonged to Hovland.
Hovland is now 5 of 6 converting a 54-hole lead into a win. When he's ahead heading into the final round, bet on him closing it out. This week, even the best in the world couldn't stop him.
